Brussels dismisses immediate risk to gas supply despite below-average reserves

SAPO Notícias4 September 2026 at 14:12

The European Commission dismissed the immediate risk of disruption to the European Union's gas supply, although reserves are below the historical average. The Community executive considered that the bloc is better prepared to face energy challenges than during the crises experienced in 2021 and 2022.

The Commission highlighted that the diversification of gas supply sources has significantly contributed to strengthening the EU's energy resilience. This strategy allowed for reducing dependence on a single supplier.

Furthermore, the reduction in gas consumption in the European Union was identified as another factor that has helped mitigate scarcity risks. The Community executive recognized that energy efficiency efforts and savings measures implemented by Member States have yielded concrete results.

The article does not specify the concrete levels of reserves nor which countries are most vulnerable to the situation.
