The Beira Baixa Line will fully reopen on September 20, Infraestruturas de Portugal announced. The section between Mouriscas-A and Vila Velha de Ródão stations had been closed since February 11, following Storm "Kristin," which caused landslides on an embankment slope between kilometers 39.150 and 39.270. With the reopening, freight and passenger trains operated by CP will once again run along the entire length of the line.
The infrastructure recovery represented a total investment of 3.4 million euros. The works included slope stabilization with approximately 5,500 cubic meters of rockfill, the construction of two reinforced concrete structures founded on micropiles to reinforce the railway platform, the rehabilitation of the drainage system, and the full restoration of the railway track, telecommunications, and ground systems. IP highlights that the intervention took place under particularly demanding conditions, due to limited access to the site, platform instability, and the high temperatures recorded during construction.
Paulo Carmona, president of Infraestruturas de Portugal, stated that the reopening represents "much more than the completion of a work," being the return of "an essential railway connection for the populations." Pedro Moreira, president of CP, highlighted that the restoration allows the resumption of an essential service for population mobility and the connection between territories, reinforcing the company's commitment to providing accessible and sustainable travel.
Initially set for September, the reopening deadline was later revised to the end of the year by the former president of IP, Miguel Cruz, who cited the complexity of the location near the river. In recent months, CP ensured road transfer services on some sections, with the suppression of some regional and Intercities trains, which will now return with the full reopening of the line.
