A team from the Centro de Biología Molecular Severo Ochoa, belonging to the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas and the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, identified in mice a new molecular mechanism essential for the correct formation of the placenta. This discovery represents a significant advance in the understanding of the biological processes involved in reproduction and fetal development.
The study demonstrates that the IRS2 protein plays a fundamental role in the formation of the syncytiotrophoblast, a specialized structure of the placenta. This structure is responsible for the exchange of oxygen and nutrients between the mother and the fetus, being crucial for the proper development of pregnancy.
The research was carried out in murine models and allowed for a better understanding of the molecular mechanisms that regulate placental formation. The results obtained may have important implications for the understanding of pregnancy complications related to placental dysfunction.
