Portuguese drivers should prepare for a sharp increase in fuel prices starting early next week. According to provisional estimates from the sector, diesel prices could soar by around 14 cents per liter, while gasoline is expected to rise by approximately seven cents. The final values will only be consolidated at the end of the day on Friday.
The escalation of the military conflict between the United States and Iran, marked by new bombings in the strategic Strait of Hormuz region, is driving up oil prices in international markets. The Brent barrel, which serves as the benchmark for European imports, is maintaining a strong upward trajectory on the London futures market, approaching the 96-dollar mark.
These expected increases come after a week of mixed behavior at national filling stations. According to the latest data from the Directorate-General for Energy and Geology, simple diesel had dropped 4.1 cents at the beginning of this week, settling at an average of 2.029 euros per liter, while simple 95-octane gasoline saw an increase of 2.5 cents, rising to 2.013 euros per liter.
If the projection for next Monday is confirmed, the diesel rise will completely offset recent decreases, registering one of the biggest weekly increases in recent months. According to financial sector analysts consulted by the publication, the upward trend is expected to continue if military instability in the region persists.
