The Madeirenses Volunteer Firefighters were alerted this Friday, at 11:30, to a smoke column in Travessa da Ribeira de João Gomes, in Funchal. The alert led to the mobilization of a light firefighting vehicle, with three members of the corporation.

Upon arriving at the location, the firefighters verified that the smoke originated from a burn-off of waste from a construction site. The fire was quickly extinguished by the operatives on the ground.

The incident did not cause any recorded victims, with the situation being controlled without the need for additional resources.

Witnesses believe the creature could be a gray fox or a fisher cat, but police have not yet managed to capture it to identify the species. The main suspicion of authorities is that the animal is contaminated with the rabies virus, and the population has been advised to remain alert to their surroundings.
