Portugal has already missed the deadlines for transposing two European directives. The Portuguese government had until 31 June to transpose the directive on promoting the repair of goods, a deadline that has already been exceeded. The directive aimed at empowering consumers with clearer information about product sustainability should also have been transposed by 27 March, which has also lapsed.
The right to repair directive aims to make consumers' lives easier by incentivizing them to choose to repair goods instead of replacing them with new products. This measure aims to reduce waste and promote a more circular economy in the European Union.
Regarding the greenwashing combating directive, this aims to empower consumers with clearer and more reliable information about the sustainability of the products they purchase, enabling more informed choices and protecting them from misleading environmental claims.
The Portuguese government now faces the challenge of proceeding with the late transposition of these European directives, which may result in sanctions or infringement proceedings by the European Commission.
