Biometano: "Portugal cannot waste this opportunity"

SAPO Notícias4 September 2026 at 11:29

The president of ACEMEL warned about the obstacles that continue to hold back the development of biomethane in Portugal, considering that the country cannot waste this strategic opportunity. The association argues that public support must begin at the production stage, so that Portugal can fully harness the potential of biomethane.

Biomethane production is pointed out as an important tool for decarbonization and for the country's energy security. The ACEMEL representative emphasizes that without adequate incentives from the initial production phase, Portugal risks falling behind other European countries in the adoption of this renewable technology.

Biomethane is a renewable gas produced from organic matter, whose development in Portugal has faced regulatory and investment obstacles. ACEMEL's position comes in the context of a broader debate on energy transition and the need to diversify renewable energy sources in the country.
