The Directorate-General for Health (DGS) issued an alert regarding the degradation of air quality in mainland Portugal, due to the presence of suspended dust from North Africa in the atmosphere. According to the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA), the phenomenon, which already occurred on Thursday, is expected to continue until Saturday.
An air mass from the North African deserts, carrying dust particles, is crossing mainland Portugal, affecting a large part of the national territory, especially the Centre and South regions. The situation is causing an increase in concentrations of inhalable particles of natural origin (PM10) in the air.
The DGS recommends that the most vulnerable population — children, elderly people, patients with chronic respiratory problems such as asthma, and cardiovascular patients — remain indoors with windows closed. The health authority advises that everyone should avoid prolonged exertion, limit outdoor physical activity, and avoid exposure to risk factors such as tobacco smoke.
Chronic patients should continue their ongoing medical treatments during this period. If symptoms worsen, the DGS recommends contacting the Saúde 24 Hotline (808 24 24 24) or seeking care at a health facility.
