NERDs: Generation Z that believes they'll never retire

Euronews Portugal4 September 2026 at 09:45

Generation Z young people are increasingly pessimistic about retirement and are convinced they will never be able to stop working. This group is being called "NERDs," an acronym that reflects their perception that traditional retirement is a distant or even unattainable reality.

Skepticism about public pensions has been growing among younger people, who question the sustainability of social security systems and governments' ability to ensure adequate benefits in the future.

This phenomenon arises in a context of growing economic instability, rising cost of living, and uncertainties in the labor market, factors that contribute to this pessimistic outlook on young people's financial future.

The designation "NERDs" in this context does not refer to the traditional stereotype of technology enthusiasts, but rather to a generation that is preparing to work for longer, or even indefinitely, without the expectation of a traditional retirement.
