Chinese artist Ai Weiwei is the guest of the 8th edition of the Contemporary Textile Art Biennial, which opens to the public starting this Saturday in Guimarães. The biennial organization estimates that the event can attract many visitors.

The exhibition presents works by the artist that convey the message that the planet is "hanging by a thread," alerting to urgent global issues that characterize his work.

This edition of the contemporary textile art biennial takes place in Guimarães, a city that has invested in cultural and artistic development in recent years, hosting internationally renowned events.

Ai Weiwei shows at Contextile in Guimarães that the planet is "hanging by a thread"

Chinese artist Ai Weiwei is the guest of honor at the 8th edition of Contextile – Biennial of Contemporary Textile Art, in Guimarães, which runs until November 29 under the theme "By a Thread," warning about the planet's environmental degradation. At the Centro Internacional das Artes José de Guimarães, Ai Weiwei presents works that include hundreds of backpacks symbolizing natural disasters, life jackets representing the migration crisis, and bed linens made from military uniforms transformed into recycled thread, in a critique of war. The biennial, which this year coincides with Guimarães' title as European Green Capital 2026, also features an international exhibition with 54 works by 51 artists from 27 countries and various interventions in public spaces.
