Agents capture crocodiles in lake that rose 70% and increased number of attacks on riverside residents

oglobo4 September 2026 at 07:00

Kenya wildlife agents are carrying out crocodile capture operations at Lake Baringo, waiting in silence for hours until the animals enter nets. The government initiated the operation to remove the larger specimens from the area and protect the riverside population, which faces an increase in reptile attacks.

The Rift Valley lakes in Kenya have reached levels unseen in at least half a century. An AFP analysis, based on satellite imagery from the Copernicus Sentinel and NASA Landsat networks, shows that Lake Baringo's surface has increased 70% since 2010 and currently covers 234 square kilometers.

The phenomenon has caused the displacement of tens of thousands of people and brought wildlife closer to inhabited areas. Agents expect that when the El Niño rains arrive, water levels will continue rising, making the situation even worse.
