A surfer was bitten by a shark while catching waves at New Smyrna Beach, Florida, United States, on Wednesday morning. The man suffered an injury to his right foot but refused additional medical treatment and left the beach after receiving first aid.

According to Volusia County Beach Safety, the incident occurred just before 11 a.m. When lifeguards arrived at the scene, they found the surfer already on the sand, receiving first aid for the injury. The man told rescuers he had been bitten while in the water but did not provide details about the encounter with the animal.

The destination, located about an hour from Orlando, has gained over the years the reputation of being the "world shark attack capital" due to the number of incidents recorded in its waters. The beach is known for attracting a large shark population, especially of the spinner shark species, which regularly frequent the area.

A resident explained that Galina likely accidentally approached the place where Zoya was buried and may have seen the body or belongings of the other elderly woman, which provoked the second attack.
