Nepal's emergency services rescued two workers alive from a tunnel on the Nepal-China border, ten days after the catastrophic landslide that hit the region on August 26. The rescue was confirmed by the Energy Minister, Biraj Bhakta Shrestha, and the Interior Minister, Sudan Gurung, who reported on the two people saved from the Trishuli-3 tunnel.
Dozens of Nepali rescuers worked during the past week to excavate the tunnels buried by the flooding, with support from specialists from India, China and South Korea. The teams focused mainly on hydroelectric power plants and dams under construction in the affected region.
Shortly after the disaster, authorities estimated that about 100 workers could be trapped in the Trishuli-3 tunnel alone. The landslide was part of a series of devastating floods that hit the Nepal-China border in late August, destroying infrastructure and leaving victims in the region.
