President Lula spoke out for the first time about the crisis at the Supreme Federal Court, prompted by the revelation of new messages exchanged between banker Daniel Vorcaro and Minister Alexandre de Moraes. The president stated that "our democracy cannot be held hostage by selective leaks" and defended a deep investigation of the case.
Lula declared that, given the gravity of the situation, the president of the STF and the Attorney General's Office should conduct the investigations. He stated that democracy depends on strong institutions and that everyone involved must be investigated, without exception.
The president said that it is time for people who act in public life to honor their duty of office and place public commitment above any individual interest. Lula emphasized that democracy needs strong and respected institutions.
He also stated that it is clear that the Brazilian political and judicial system needs deep reforms, and defended that everyone be investigated, without any shield for anyone, "cost what it may."
