The District Federation of Évora of the Socialist Party claimed on Thursday political responsibility for the completion of the Eastern Variant of Évora on IP2, infrastructure inaugurated on the same day with an investment of 54.9 million euros funded by the Recovery and Resilience Plan. The socialist structure maintains that it was during PS governance that the project advanced again and obtained European funding, considering the start of construction in November 2024 as fulfillment of a commitment made to the region.
The PS of Évora claims that the work had been paralyzed since 2011 due to the austerity and disinvestment options of the then Government led by the PSD, this being a political assessment expressed in the statement. The new variant has 12.8 kilometers in length and highway profile, allowing traffic, including heavy vehicles, to be diverted from the city center.
The position of the Federation extends to other road interventions in the Alentejo, namely the requalified sections of IP8 between Ferreira do Alentejo and Beja, Santa Margarida do Sado and Ferreira do Alentejo, and Relvas Verdes and Roncão, whose total investment exceeds 109 million euros. According to the PS, these interventions result from the planning and construction contracts launched during socialist governance, between July and October 2024.
The socialist Federation considers that the infrastructure will have effects on road safety and regional economic development, framing its completion within a territorial cohesion policy. In the statement, the party structure ends by establishing a political contraposition with the current right, defending that the investment made in the Alentejo constitutes one of the hallmarks of socialist governance.
