The operation took place in support of the Greek Coast Guard, which requested the collaboration of European authorities to intervene in the situation. The Portuguese participation in this mission is part of the joint effort of the European Union to manage migratory flows in the Mediterranean.
The rescued people were then handed over to the competent Greek authorities for the necessary legal and humanitarian procedures.
