As we age, the loss of bone density becomes a natural challenge, but one that can be combated through appropriate lifestyle habits. According to Dr. Mallory Christopherson, in statements to the Health portal, there are seven fundamental strategies for maintaining strong bone structure and preventing health complications in the future. The specialist emphasizes that although bone loss is a natural process of aging, it is perfectly treatable.
The first strategy involves increasing calcium intake, an essential mineral found in foods such as milk, salmon, almonds, and dark leafy greens, including spinach and kale. For older adults, the recommended supplementation generally ranges between 400 and 800 milligrams daily, helping to reduce the risk of fractures, especially in postmenopausal women. Vitamin D is equally indispensable, as it is crucial for proper calcium absorption, and insufficient levels of this nutrient are directly associated with bone weakening and the development of osteoporosis.
Increasing protein consumption is another important measure, contributing significantly to the preservation of bone mass and prevention of osteoporosis. Regarding physical exercise, three complementary approaches are recommended: resistance training, such as weightlifting, which applies beneficial forces to the bones; weight-bearing aerobic exercise, such as walking, dancing, climbing stairs, or running, which helps improve bone mineral density; and balance training, essential for preventing falls and resulting fractures.
Finally, maintaining a healthy body weight is considered crucial. Excess weight increases the risk of falls, while low body weight accelerates bone loss and elevates susceptibility to fractures. The balance between these extremes is therefore essential for bone health in adulthood.
