MUNICIPALITIES FROM TRÁS-OS-MONTES UNITE TO DEMAND TAX COLLECTION ON THE SALE OF DOURO DAMS

Canal N – Notícias – Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro3 September 2026 at 17:27

Ten municipalities from Trás-os-Montes and Douro formalized a joint position to monitor the taxation process of the sale of the six Douro dams and defend the collection of associated taxes. The municipalities involved are Alfândega da Fé, Alijó, Carrazeda de Ansiães, Macedo de Cavaleiros, Miranda do Douro, Mirandela, Mogadouro, Murça, Torre de Moncorvo and Vila Flor, which approved the declaration after a meeting held on August 27 in Torre de Moncorvo.

The mayors consider the initiation of the settlement process by the Tax and Customs Authority relevant, but guarantee they will maintain a joint position and monitor the evolution of the process until the collection of the amounts legally deemed owed.

In the declaration, the municipalities argue that the issue is particularly important for the territories where the hydroelectric infrastructures are located, which for decades have borne their economic, environmental and territorial impacts.

The ten municipalities consider that the fulfillment of the tax obligations associated with the sale of the dams also constitutes a matter of territorial equity and reaffirm their commitment to continue defending the interests of the Trás-os-Montes and Douro populations throughout the process.

Miguel Sousa Tavares comments on the motion of censure presented by Chega against the Government, related to the controversy around the car offered by the father-in-law to the Minister of Internal Administration, Luís Montenegro. The commentator considers that the majority of Portuguese want to topple the government for reasons that have nothing to do with this specific issue, emphasizing that he continues to see no reasons for the minister's resignation given what has been made public, and accusing Ventura of being "obsessed" with this issue.

Hungary maintains automatic asylum for Ukrainians of military age contradicting the European Union

Hungary announced it will continue to offer automatic asylum to Ukrainian men of military age (25 to 60 years), contradicting a European Union decision from July. Prime Minister Péter Magyar justified the measure by the presence of ethnic Hungarians in the Transcarpathia region in Ukraine, who flee to Hungary. The EU had decided on Ukraine's defensive needs, but Budapest maintains its differentiated reception position.
