Prefecture of Rio Officially Creates the Neighborhood of Ingleses, in the North Zone

cbn3 September 2026 at 16:49

The prefecture of Rio de Janeiro officially created on Thursday the neighborhood of Ingleses, in the North Zone of the city. The decree was sanctioned by Mayor Eduardo Cavaliere and meets a long-standing claim of the local community. The new neighborhood was formed from the subdivision of areas that previously belonged to the neighborhoods of Del Castilho and Maria da Graça, bringing together ten streets and one alley.

Residents of the region hope that the official recognition will bring improvements and strengthen the local identity. Physical education teacher Maurício Pereira stated that the change can help give more visibility to the demands of residents and attract new services to the area.

Among the main expectations of residents are increased security in the neighborhood, improved circulation in the region, more leisure options and the installation of small businesses. Maurício Pereira also criticized the fact that the neighborhood is quite stagnant and argued that official recognition should help revitalize the area.

The occupation of the neighborhood of Ingleses is linked to the old Nova América Factory. At the beginning of the last century, British engineers and technicians who worked in the factory settled in the region, giving rise to the name of the neighborhood.
