Researcher from Nova SBE wins 1.5 million in European funding

Nikita Melnikov, assistant professor of economics at Nova SBE, obtained a 1.5 million euro ERC Starting Grant to fund for five years the project CRACKDOWNS, which studies the social and economic transformations in El Salvador following the 2022 government operation that dismantled the territorial structures of MS-13 and Barrio 18 gangs. The research will analyze the impact on education, the redistribution of economic activity, and programs to reduce discrimination in the labor market based on address. A pilot experiment revealed that candidates with identical résumés were 60% more likely to be selected when the address was outside former gang territories. This is the fourth ERC grant awarded to Nova SBE and the only one this year in Portugal in the area of economics, management, and finance.
