Mirandês arrives at schools, the Constitution, and Valter Hugo Mãe's work

Jornal Nordeste3 September 2026 at 16:10

Miranda do Douro hosts, this month, two weeks of initiatives dedicated to the Mirandese language, as part of a program that aims to promote and value this minority language. The event includes the presentation of various cultural and educational initiatives related to Mirandese.

During these two weeks, the first school textbook in Mirandese for the 1st year will be presented, an important milestone for the teaching of this language in schools. This pedagogical material represents a significant step in the valorization and preservation of Mirandese, making it easier to teach to younger generations.

Among the initiatives, the presentation of the translation of the Constitution of the Portuguese Republic into Mirandese is also highlighted. This translation allows speakers of this language to access the fundamental text of Portuguese law in their mother tongue, reinforcing the institutional recognition of Mirandese.

The program also includes the presentation of the Mirandese version of a work by Valter Hugo Mãe, a Portuguese writer known for his literary work. This initiative demonstrates the effort to integrate the Mirandese language into the Portuguese cultural and literary landscape, making it more present in the daily life of the community.
