The University of Minho hosts an Ibero-American meeting on human rights in higher education, which takes place on the Gualtar campus, in Braga. The event, which starts on Monday, October 7th, in auditorium B1, brings together representatives from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Spain, Mexico, Peru, and Portugal to discuss the main challenges faced by university ombudspersons, advocates, and ombudsman offices, focusing on rights protection, inclusion, student vulnerability, mental health, and the impact of artificial intelligence in the academic context.
The opening session is scheduled for 10:00 AM and features interventions from the president of UMinho's General Council, Maria da Assunção Raimundo, rector Pedro Arezes, the vice-president of the Braga Municipal Council, Hortense Santos, and the president of the Ibero-American Network of University Ombudspersons (RIdDU), Rosa Maria Vasconcelos, who is also the Student Ombudsman at the University of Minho. The inaugural conference will be delivered by Andreia Sofia Pinto Oliveira, a faculty member from UMinho's Law School.
The program includes four thematic panels with reference specialists, namely Anna Guillermina Yukelson from Universidad Nacional de Córdoba (Argentina), Ana María Moure Pino from Universidad de Chile, Javier La Rosa Calle from Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú, Katya Gualter from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, and Pedro de Matos Gonçalves from the University of Leiria and Oeste. On Tuesday, Adriana Lago de Carvalho will address the topic of inclusive gender equality in higher education.
RIdDU, created in 2015, currently comprises 83 higher education institutions from various Ibero-American countries and includes nine Portuguese institutions, with the University of Minho being one of them. The network positions itself as a platform for cooperation and sharing best practices in promoting and defending the rights of the academic community.
