Even after the repair of a water main that ruptured on Rei Pelé Avenue, in Maracanã, North Zone of Rio de Janeiro, 19 neighborhoods still face water supply problems. The leak happened during the night from Monday to Tuesday, flooding the street and opening a crater at the location.
The repair of the water main was completed on Wednesday night (2nd), but residents of several regions continue without water. Among the affected neighborhoods are: Andaraí, Botafogo, Catumbi, Copacabana, Cosme Velho, Engenho Novo, Laranjeiras, Leme, Lins de Vasconcelos, Maracanã, Praça da Bandeira, Riachuelo, Rio Comprido, Sampaio, Santa Teresa, São Francisco Xavier, Tijuca, Urca and Vila Isabel.
Bars and restaurants in the area are the most harmed, since they depend on water for cooking, washing dishes and cleaning the establishments. Many merchants need to resort to water trucks to ensure supply, which generates high costs.
With the high demand for trucked water, some merchants spend around R$1,000 to maintain their activities. This is the case of Rafael Gouveia, who works at a Japanese restaurant near Praça da Bandeira, one of the neighborhoods impacted by the water supply crisis.
