Stellantis factory in Mangualde reaches milestone of two million vehicles produced

Jornal do Centro3 September 2026 at 14:08

The Stellantis factory in Mangualde reached on Wednesday the historic milestone of two million vehicles produced. The vehicle that marked the occasion was a Citroën ë-Berlingo Van, in grey color and special edition "Berlingo 30 years", destined for a customer in the Leiria region. The unit employs directly approximately 900 people and represents 27% of national automobile production.

The director of the Mangualde Production Center, Múcio Brasileiro, stated that reaching this milestone is a testament to the rigor, passion and commitment of several generations of employees. The responsible party emphasized that the factory will continue focused on the transition to electric mobility, combining tradition, innovation and sustainability.

Founded in 1962 as Citroën Lusitânia, the unit started production in 1964 with the Citroën 2CV AZL. Over six decades, it produced models such as the Citroën DS, Méhari, AX and Saxo, having manufactured in 1990 the last world unit of the 2CV. Currently, it produces thermal and electric models from four brands: Peugeot, Citroën, Opel and Fiat, specializing in light commercial vehicles.

In 2025, the factory achieved its historic production record, with 91,670 vehicles, and currently produces 372 vehicles per day in three shifts. Approximately 95% of production is destined for export. The unit was the first in Portugal to produce in large series totally electric vehicles and has a "CustomFit Center" for transformation and customization of fleets directly on the production line.
