980 euros: the average tax refund in 2026

The average IRS refund in 2026 was set at 980 euros. Almost all of the 2.660 million refunds planned have already been paid to taxpayers.

The number of declarations entitled to refunds increased by 3.5% compared to the previous campaign. Simultaneously, the total amount to be returned grew by 8.6% compared to the previous year.

These data reflect the evolution of the IRS settlement campaign, which continues to process the refunds due to Portuguese taxpayers.
