Portugal records 74% drop in burnt area, but continues to have the highest percentage among EU countries

SIC Notícias3 September 2026 at 14:16

Portugal recorded a 74% reduction in burnt area, according to data from the Institute for Nature Conservation and Forests (ICNF). Despite this significant decrease, the country continues to be the one with the highest percentage of burned area among all European Union member states.

Throughout this year, nearly 7 thousand fires were counted in Portuguese territory. The North region was the most affected by the fires, suffering the greatest impact in terms of destruction.

Approximately 21 thousand hectares were destroyed by arson, which represents a significant portion of the total burnt area. This statistic shows that intentional human action continues to be a determining factor in the forest fires affecting the country.

Nikolas uses praise to announce explanation about audio with Vorcaro: 'I'm cutting my hair to look gorgeous'

Federal deputy Nikolas Ferreira (PL-MG) reacted with irony to the publication of an audio by the ICL Notícias portal in which he asks banker Daniel Vorcaro, founder of Banco Master, to help an ally in a negotiation involving a mining asset. Hours after the report was published, Nikolas posted a video cutting his own hair and stating he is getting ready to "look gorgeous," in reference to one of the leaked messages. He announced he would republish an official statement at noon. According to ICL, the audio sent to Vorcaro on March 30, 2025, dealt with a request on behalf of lawyer Thiago Rodrigues de Faria, former aide to the parliamentarian's office.

Elevador da Glória: PS insists on the creation of a commission in the Municipal Assembly of Lisbon

One year after the Glória elevator derailment, which caused 16 dead and 24 injured, the PS at the Lisbon Municipal Assembly has again insisted on creating an ad hoc commission to follow up on the municipal response to the accident, a proposal that had been rejected three months ago by the right-wing majority (PSD, CDS-PP, IL and Chega). The socialists argue that the final report from the investigation authorities has been postponed to early 2027, but that the political responsibility of the assembly cannot be equally postponed, noting that indemnification processes remain incomplete and that victims and families continue to await answers. The proposal aims to oversee the actions of the municipality and Carris, the company responsible for the century-old elevator, without replacing the investigations by GPIAAF or the Public Ministry, but focusing on the implementation of safety recommendations and the development of the new elevator projected for 2029.
