The European Commission intends to take measures to restrict short-term rentals, such as those promoted through the Airbnb platform, and second homes, in an attempt to address the housing crisis affecting Europe. The objective is to alleviate the pressure on European real estate markets, where prices have become increasingly unaffordable for many citizens.
According to a document to which Euronews had access, the European Commission intends to clarify when and how national authorities can restrict short-term rentals, particularly in areas that are under strong real estate pressure.
This initiative comes in a context of growing concern about access to housing across the European continent, where the shortage of properties for long-term rental has contributed to the exponential rise in prices and to increasing difficulties in accessing housing for the local population.
