A 33-year-old Asturian forest firefighter, Guillermo Carballo, suffered an attack from a swarm of common wasps on a farm in Quinzanas, Asturias. The man recounted that he suddenly found himself surrounded by a cloud of wasps that attacked him in a matter of seconds.
The incident occurred days before the news story was published, when Guillermo Carballo had already been stung twice by Asian hornets (velutina) before the attack by common wasps. The sequence of stings resulted in 27 stings all over his body.
After the attack, the firefighter ended up being admitted to the Intensive Care Unit at Hospital San Agustín in Avilés, where he received medical care due to the severity of the stings.
Currently, Guillermo Carballo is recovering at home from the scare, still marked by the experience. He himself acknowledges that he does not want to think about what could have happened if he had not reacted quickly.
