The film "Surda", directed by Spaniard Eva Liberdad, will be screened this Thursday, September 3rd, at 8:00 PM, at the Teatro Municipal António Pinheiro in Tavira. The screening, promoted by the European Parliament Information Office in Portugal, features adapted subtitles for people with hearing difficulties and Portuguese sign language interpretation. Entry is free, limited to the venue's capacity, with tickets available at Europe Direct Algarve from 6:00 PM and at the theater from 7:00 PM.

The film follows a deaf woman who becomes the mother of a hearing baby. The story was developed by Eva Liberdad from an experience shared by her sister, Miriam Garlo, who is also deaf and stars in the film. "Surda" premiered at the 2025 Berlinale, where it received the Audience Award, and at the 2026 Goya Awards, Eva Liberdad was honored as Best New Director and Miriam Garlo received the award for Best New Actress.

The screening will be followed by a conversation focused on difference, inclusion, and accessibility, taking as its starting point a statement by the director: "I lament that society is not prepared to accept difference." Before the screening, teams from Europe Direct Algarve and the European Parliament Information Office in Portugal will be present with an initiative dedicated to European values.

The screening is part of the program of the XII Mediterranean Diet Fair, which is taking place in Tavira, with the support of Europe Direct Algarve, the Regional Coordination and Development Commission (CCDR) of the Algarve, and the Municipality of Tavira. The film is the winner of the LUX 2026 Audience Award.
