Censura motion 'makes no sense', says Montenegro. 'There is no reason to justify interrupting the Government's work'

Eco3 September 2026 at 11:52

Prime Minister Luís Montenegro said on Thursday that the motion of censure presented by Chega makes no sense, underlining that there is no reason to justify interrupting the Government's work. The statements were made from São Tomé and Príncipe, where Montenegro was on an official visit.

Chega's motion of censure comes in the context of the controversies involving the Minister of Internal Administration. The far-right party decided to proceed with this parliamentary initiative against the Executive.

Montenegro accused the opposition of political and partisan games, arguing that the opposition forces would be more capable of presenting themselves as alternatives to the Government if they showed a sense of responsibility. No one wants, according to the prime minister, to be governed by forces that do not demonstrate responsibility and a sense of State.

PSP: Lisbon Area Operates with "Minimum Staff" for Needs

The commander of the Lisbon Metropolitan Command (Cometlis) of the PSP warned that the Lisbon area is operating with "minimum staff" for all needs, advocating for more police officers in the country's largest command. With nine municipalities and approximately three million inhabitants, Cometlis has only six thousand police officers to also cover major events and security of sovereign bodies. Luís Elias highlighted that Cometlis' staff is larger than the Portuguese Navy or the Judicial Police, but resources are not abundant. Regarding the 200 police officers promised by the prime minister in May, the commander stated that a training course ends in December and a significant part should be assigned to Cometlis. Regarding the restructuring plan that includes the closure of police stations in Lisbon, Porto, and Setúbal, Luís Elias stated that in some cases it does not involve closure but rather the reconversion of police stations, with the aim of placing more police officers in operational functions on the street.

Discord has ten days to present a proposal to protect users

The Federal Justice in the Federal District granted a ten-day deadline for the Discord platform to present a conciliation proposal in an action filed by the federal government, which demands measures to protect women, children, and adolescents on the internet. During the first hearing of the case, with participation from the AGU and the MPF, Discord expressed intention to present protocols to receive notifications about sextortion cases, content moderation mechanisms regarding animal abuse and cruelty, as well as measures to preserve user data for potential requests from investigations. Before the legal action, the government attempted an out-of-court settlement but considered the measures presented by the platform insufficient.
