Writer and Famous Feminist Activist Gloria Steinem Dies at 92

cbn3 September 2026 at 11:27

Gloria Steinem, writer and acclaimed feminist activist, died at 92 at her home in New York City, surrounded by people who loved her. The Gloria Steinem Foundation announced her death on social media on Thursday, stating that she "died peacefully." The cause of death has not yet been disclosed.

Steinem was a pioneering figure of the women's liberation movement in the second half of the 20th century and was recognized by Newsweek magazine in 1971 as "The New Woman." She was co-founder of Ms. magazine, the first major publication to be owned, run, and written by women.

Ms. Magazine was pioneering in promoting equal rights, helping raise awareness about inclusion issues, media representation, and social justice that affected women and girls. At the time, politics, media, and consumerism mixed like never before.

As a journalist, Steinem undid the notion that "women's issues" were restricted to women, or that women's voices did not belong in political discussions. Her work helped broaden the dialogue about gender equality in American society and around the world.

Court rejects Sócrates' precautionary measure regarding appointment of court-appointed lawyer in Operation Marquês

The Lisbon Court of Appeal rejected the precautionary measure filed by José Sócrates against the appointment of Luís Carlos Esteves as his court-appointed lawyer in the Operation Marquês case. The court validated the lawyer's appointment, which was designated by the Public Prosecutor's Office to represent the former prime minister when he stopped appointing his own defense lawyer. The decision thus confirms the legitimacy of Esteves' choice to defend Sócrates in the judicial process.
