The challenges of combating pirated products that enter and circulate in Brazil

cbn3 September 2026 at 10:54

The illegal market for pirated products represents a significant challenge in Brazil, circulating both at popular fairs and on the internet, putting companies and consumers at risk. The issue remains without an effective solution in the country.

Ricardo Lagreca Siqueira, legal director of Mercado Livre, states that the solution lies in raising awareness among society about the severity of the crime. He highlights that many people who buy these products consider it a minor offense and something normalized, when in reality it is strongly linked to organized crime.

According to Siqueira, the problem is much more complex than it appears, involving increased violence and a decline in tax revenue. He argues that all actors need to work together, as a single company or sector will not be able to resolve the issue alone.

The case of falsified beverages that caused last year's methanol crisis brought the debate directly to the consumer and exposed the severity of the problem, mainly due to the extensive number of victims recorded.
