Chega will proceed with a motion of censure against the Government, having submitted the document to the Assembly of the Republic on this Wednesday. André Ventura justified the initiative by referring to the Minister of Internal Administration, Luís Neves, accusing him of harming the "dignity of the State," degrading institutions, and using "threats and intimidation." This is the first time a motion of censure is submitted while Parliament is on recess.
This is not, however, the first motion of censure against the executive. Since 1976, 36 motions of censure have been submitted, with only one managing to bring down a Government – in 1987. Former Prime Minister Passos Coelho was the one who faced the most motions, totaling six.
The Prime Minister, Montenegro, has already ruled out the possibility of political crisis, considering that the motion will follow the path of the previous 35. Chega's motion of censure arises in a context of political tension, but its approval continues to be considered unlikely.
