Netherlands withdraws 86 tonnes of gold from US and Canada due to "geopolitical instability"

SOL2 September 2026 at 18:42

The Netherlands transferred 86 tonnes of gold from the United States and Canada to London. The operation was carried out by the Dutch central bank, which decided to repatriate a significant part of its gold reserves stored abroad.

The reason given for this transfer is the current "geopolitical instability". The Netherlands' central bank expressed growing concerns about global geopolitical developments and considered it necessary to have the reserves more accessible.

With this change, the central bank aims to increase the speed of mobilization of reserves in case of crisis. London's proximity as an international financial center was a determining factor in choosing the destination for the repatriated gold.

The decision is part of a broader trend of several countries evaluating the location of their gold reserves abroad, especially in light of recent geopolitical tensions and the need to ensure greater security and accessibility to their assets.
