The Sierra de Cazorla, in Jaén, managed to recover the red kite population through a reintroduction program that has already released 230 birds in the last five years. The kites came from Madrid and Mallorca to reinforce the presence of this species in the natural park.
The last batch of 24 birds arrived last Monday to continue this conservation effort. The program is driven by the Grupo de Rehabilitación de la Fauna Autóctona y su Hábitat (GREFA), a private conservation organization based in Madrid.
The main objective is to reestablish the red kite population in this area of Andalusia, where the species had disappeared or was in steep decline. This type of conservation initiative involves capturing birds in other regions and their controlled release into the new habitat.
