The Madeiran petrel population, an endemic seabird of the Madeira archipelago classified as endangered, remains stable despite a 2024 fire having threatened its nesting area. The information was confirmed by the Institute of Forests and Nature Conservation.
Due to the proximity of the flames to the main known nesting area, five juvenile birds were removed from their nests on August 21, 2024. These birds were translocated to the Wildlife Bird Recovery Center, where they received the necessary care.
The fire represented a significant threat to the species, which depends exclusively on the Madeira archipelago for breeding. The current stability of the population indicates that the intervention measures were effective in protecting the birds during the critical period.
