Fourteen districts of mainland Portugal are under yellow warning until Saturday due to hot weather. The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA) extended the warning to Coimbra, Leiria and Faro, which join the remaining districts already covered by the weather alert.
The yellow warning is the least severe in the IPMA alert scale, but indicates meteorological conditions that require attention. The high temperatures and intense heat motivated this classification for the affected districts.
Due to the hot weather, IPMA has also placed several municipalities on the mainland under maximum danger of rural fire. This classification represents the highest level of fire risk, which implies increased danger for authorities and the population.
Authorities are reinforcing prevention warnings, asking the population to avoid risky behaviors that may cause fires, especially in the most vulnerable areas of the territory.
