The Timorese President, José Ramos-Horta, remembered Father Martinho da Costa Lopes as the "voice of the voiceless" during a tribute held in Manatuto, east of Dili. The ceremony took place in the hometown of the former apostolic administrator of the Diocese of Dili.

Martinho da Costa Lopes was an important figure in the history of East Timor, having served as apostolic administrator of the Diocese of Dili. His actions during the Indonesian occupation period were marked by the defense of the Timorese communities.

The ceremony in Manatuto brought together Timorese authorities and members of the local community to pay tribute to the priest. José Ramos-Horta, as President of the Republic, highlighted the role of Martinho da Costa Lopes in representing those who had no voice during periods of great adversity for the Timorese people.
