The Maltese tycoon Yorgen Fenech, suspected of ordering the murder of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia, was acquitted of the charges. The acquittal provoked public outrage, with many considering the verdict a denial of justice.

Daphne Caruana Galizia was assassinated in 2017 through a car bomb. The journalist was known for her investigations into corruption involving prominent figures in Malta, including Prime Minister Robert Abela himself.

Caruana Galizia's murder shocked the world and placed Malta, the smallest Member State of the European Union, under intense international scrutiny. The situation exposed apparent failures in Malta's rule of law, which were criticized by European institutions.

The case led to several political resignations in Malta, including that of Prime Minister Joseph Muscat, who ended up resigning from office in 2020 after weeks of protests.
