The Senate's Constitution and Justice Committee (CCJ) approved this Wednesday the Constitutional Amendment Proposal (PEC) on Public Security, a priority proposal of the Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) government for the security area. The expectation is that the PEC will be voted on today in the House's plenary.
The PEC reinforces the Union's role in public security and increases legal certainty for the Federal Police to combat criminal organizations and militias operating in the national territory. The proposal also ensures greater cooperation between the federal government and the states to act against these criminal groups.
Among other measures, the PEC provides for the possibility that perpetrators of serious crimes, such as gang members, may be prevented from progressing to a less restrictive prison regime. The rapporteur of the measure in the Senate, Rogério Carvalho (PT-SE), presented an amendment to the text on Tuesday night.
The senator addressed a demand from the sports sector to prevent resources allocated to the area from being drained with the approval of the PEC. He made an adjustment regarding this specific point.
