Aguiar-Branco convenes conference to decide date of Chega's motion of censure

Diário de Viseu2 September 2026 at 20:30

Aguiar-Branco, president of the Assembly of the Republic, convened a conference of parliamentary leaders to decide the date of the motion of censure presented by Chega. The announcement came after he was informed via message by the leader of the Chega party about the presentation of the motion.

The president of the Assembly of the Republic also stated that he will send a dispatch to all parliamentary groups regarding this matter. The motion of censure is a parliamentary instrument that can lead to the fall of the government, depending on the voting result in the assembly.

The decision on when the motion will be discussed and voted on will now depend on the deliberation made at the conference of party leaders, which brings together the representatives of all the benches with seats in the Portuguese parliament.

Russia summons German representative in Moscow after Berlin's measures

Russia summoned Germany's charge d'affaires in Moscow, Bernd Finke, in response to Berlin's retaliation measures after holding Moscow responsible for the attempted drone attack at Leipzig/Halle airport in August. Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Grushko ruled out a diplomatic break for now, but warned that diplomacy is a "two-way street." Putin considered the German measures a "big mistake" against the interests of the German people, linking the reaction to Chancellor Friedrich Merz's declining popularity and upcoming electoral campaigns in Germany. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen accused Russia of a "new escalation" on European soil and stated it will not tolerate such attacks.
