Appeal insists on self-defense and requests acquittal of police officer for Odair Moniz homicide

RTP Notícias2 September 2026 at 22:30

Police officer Bruno Pinto was convicted for the death of Odair Moniz. His defense filed an appeal to the Lisbon Court of Appeal, insisting on the self-defense theory and requesting acquittal both at the criminal and civil level.

The request for civil acquittal would mean that the police officer would be exempt from paying damages to the family of Odair Moniz, in addition to not facing criminal consequences for the homicide.

The appeal now awaits the decision of the Lisbon Court of Appeal, which will have to evaluate whether the self-defense theory presented by the defense is sufficient to overturn the conviction.
