Zelensky says he considers the shooting between two branches of Ukrainian intelligence services "shameful"

Jornal Económico2 September 2026 at 22:21

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky today classified as an "absolutely shameful situation" the shooting between two units of Ukrainian intelligence services in Kyiv, announcing a complete investigation to establish the facts and responsibilities.

The shooting involved the Ukrainian Security Service (SBU) and Ukrainian military intelligence services (GUR), occurring during an investigation into an alleged terrorist plan against the deputy commander of the Russian Volunteer Corps, Stepan Kaplunov, who fights on Ukraine's side against Russia.

Zelensky stated he had spoken with Prosecutor-General Ruslan Kravchenko and that the State Bureau of Investigation will verify all testimonies and analyze the situation step by step. The Ukrainian leader promised that those involved will be held accountable and that disciplinary decisions will be made by the directors of the intelligence services.

The Ukrainian president emphasized that "in Ukraine, only firing at Russian occupiers to defend Ukraine is permitted," adding that no other shooting will ever be considered by the state as something someone has permission to do.
