PCP defends that Government deserves censure, but criticizes Chega and reserves voting position

Notícias de Coimbra2 September 2026 at 20:01

The PCP defended today that the PSD/CDS-PP Government deserves censure, but criticized Chega, alleging that the party led by André Ventura only wants "political juggling" and not a true solution to the country's problems. This position was expressed at a time when a motion of censure to the executive is being debated.

The communist party reserved its voting position, choosing not to publicly announce how it will vote before the formal discussion. This posture arises in a context of political tension between the various parties of the Portuguese opposition.

The PCP's position contrasts with that of Chega, which also presented or supported a motion of censure. The far-right party has been one of the main critics of the Government, but the PCP considered that its approach is more oriented towards media gains than towards concrete solutions.

This situation reflects the divisions in the Portuguese opposition regarding the best way to confront the PSD and CDS-PP executive, with the PCP distinguishing itself through a substantive critique of the Government, while maintaining a reserved position on the specific motion under discussion.
