The European Parliament Committee approved recommendations for legislation requiring employers to protect workers' mental health. MEPs want a European law against stress and harassment at work that imposes new obligations on companies regarding the prevention of psychosocial risks.
This initiative comes in the context of a report that alerts to the significant impact of work-related depression on the European economy. The annual cost of work-related depression in the European Union is estimated at 100 billion euros, representing a considerable burden for the economic and social systems of member states.
MEPs intend for future legislation to establish clear norms for employers to implement mental health protection measures for their workers, including the prevention of stress and harassment in the workplace. This proposal aims to harmonize occupational health policies at European level.
