"Socialism" gains ground in the US and pushes the Democratic Party to the left

El Periódico Mediterráneo - General2 September 2026 at 19:00

The word "socialist" is becoming a political credential in the United States, after almost 80 years being considered an insult laden with the legacy of the Cold War. The term, which previously represented a negative brand in national politics, is now beginning to be embraced by influential figures of the Democratic Party.

Among the main names that embody this progressivism are New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani, the prolific Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and Senator Bernie Sanders. These leaders represent a left wing of the Democratic Party that has gained significant space among voters.

The deterioration of the economic situation of the American population, with the soaring housing prices and the increase in energy costs after the United States entered Iran, transformed the cost of living and foreign policy into two of the main arguments against Donald Trump's administration.

It is precisely this left wing of the Democratic Party that proposes a more frontal rupture with the current administration's agenda, seeking to convert the economic malaise of the population into political momentum for their proposals.

Presidential candidate Fernando Haddad (PT), on a campaign stop in Santos (SP), was questioned about President Lula's silence in the case involving Banco Master and the so-called "Dark Horse scandal," but did not comment directly. Without answering the question about Lula, Haddad defended breaking the secrecy of all processes without selectivity, including the case of Flavinho Bolsonaro and that of Daniel Vorcaro himself, one of those involved in the scandal. The PT candidate criticized the fact that only some are publicly exposed while others remain under secrecy, noting that Lula is the only presidential candidate who has not yet spoken out about the case. The article also mentions that Flavinho Bolsonaro again requested Moraes' impeachment, while Fachin opened a session at the STF without mentioning the crisis involving Alexandre de Moraes and Vorcaro.
