Alto Minho gains new barrier against wildfires

Alto Minho2 September 2026 at 18:58

The Ministry of Agriculture and Sea declared the public utility, with urgency, of lands situated in several parishes of the municipalities of Arcos de Valdevez and Monção, destined for the creation of fuel management strips in Alto Minho.

The fire defense network will cover 91 land parcels in the parishes of Sistelo, Union of Parishes of Alvora and Loureda, and Union of Parishes of Portela and Extremo, in the municipality of Arcos de Valdevez, as well as in the parish of Merufe and the Union of Parishes of Anhões and Luzio, in Monção. The administrative easement covers a total area of 1,494,487.33 square meters, with a 126-meter wide strip.

The costs arising from the establishment of the administrative easement will be borne by the Institute for Nature Conservation and Forests, which has budget financial coverage for this purpose.

The fuel management strips constitute primary, secondary, and tertiary defense networks, aiming to reduce the area burned by large wildfires and facilitate direct firefighting intervention, creating favorable conditions for fighting rural fires in strategic territories.
