The President of the United States, Donald Trump, suggested on Wednesday that the Strait of Hormuz be renamed "Trump Strait." This is not the first time Trump has proposed such a change, having previously suggested that the Gulf of Mexico be renamed "Gulf of America" and that Lake Ontario bear his name.
Trump stated that Washington currently controls the passage connecting the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman. The Strait of Hormuz is a strategic waterway of global importance for oil transportation.
This suggestion comes in the context of international tensions and an increasingly assertive US foreign policy by the Trump administration, which has sought to assert presence in various regions of the world.
The proposal to rename the Strait of Hormuz has not yet received a formal response from countries in the region, namely Iran, which borders this strategic passage and considers the waters of the Strait as part of its territory.
