Acreditar asks that parents be able to accompany their children with cancer together: "A child with cancer needs both parents"

SAPO Notícias2 September 2026 at 16:40

Acreditar is taking advantage of Golden September, which is the international month of awareness for pediatric cancer, to alert to the need to change the accompaniment regime for children with oncological disease in Portugal. The organization argues that both parents should be able to be present simultaneously during the most difficult moments of the disease.

The association states that a child with cancer needs both parents, emphasizing the importance of parental support during treatment. This position from Acreditar comes in the context of a month dedicated to raising public awareness of the challenges faced by children and families affected by pediatric cancer.

In Portugal, approximately 400 new cases of pediatric cancer are diagnosed per year, representing a significant number of families facing this disease. Acreditar, as an organization supporting these families, considers that current legislation does not allow the simultaneous presence of both parents with the child during crucial moments of treatment.
