Social Communications: National Days will be an occasion of listening to 'build a common path'

Agência ECCLESIA2 September 2026 at 16:56

The National Days of Social Communication will take place on September 24 at the Seminary of Leiria, under the theme "For a grammar of encounter." The director of the National Secretariat for Social Communications, Rita Carvalho, stated that the event will be an occasion for listening and identifying good practices to "build a common path," emphasizing the importance of communicators listening to one another.

D. Alexandre Palma, president of the Episcopal Commission for Social Communications, explained that the commission's objective is to promote "subsidiarity," that is, standing alongside communicators to give them more strength, resources, capacity, imagination, and courage, rather than acting in their place.

The day's program includes a dialogue between D. Alexandre Palma and journalist João Miguel Tavares on the theme "Re-learning the art of conversation," followed by group work sessions where participants can choose between six thematic meetings: organizing a diocesan secretariat, caring for institutional communication, creating digital content, reporting on the Church and religion, communicating in ecclesial media, and announcing in the digital mission.

On the day before the event, the Episcopal Commission for Social Communications invites the directors of the Diocesan Secretariats for a dinner and a working meeting at the same location. The ultimate goal of the days is to, based on the participants' opinions, design a joint map for the communication of the Church in Portugal.

USA urge international community to cut ties with Nicaragua after Ortega's regime bans opposition in elections

The United States urged the international community to sever ties with Nicaragua after the country's National Assembly unanimously approved a constitutional reform that bans opposition participation in elections. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio issued a statement in which he classified the government of Daniel Ortega and his wife Rosario Murillo as a "brutal dictatorship" and called on international allies to "immediately cease normal operations" with Nicaragua, arguing that dictatorships that deny citizens' inalienable rights should not enjoy the same economic and political benefits as governments committed to peace and hemispheric security.
